1. Description
National Teacher of the Year
The National Teacher of the Year award is presented to a dedicated K-12 educator and AFA State Teacher of the Year winner. This honor recognizes STEM educators for their outstanding classroom performance, collaborative initiatives, educational outreach, leadership, and significant impact in the school and community.
2. Eligibility
- To be eligible the candidate must be submitted by their respective AFA State leaders. The candidate must be a former AFA State Teacher of the Year selected during the most recent past two years. Applications must be submitted by the deadline of May 31.
3. Application
1. The completed AFA National ToY nomination form.
2. EDUCATIONAL HISTORY AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: In outline form, listing colleges and universities attended; degrees earned and dates of attendance; and employment history including time period, grade level, and subject area. List professional association memberships and offices held; service on committees, commissions, and task forces; and other relevant activities. Also list leadership activities in staff development and the training of future teachers along with awards and other recognition. Response should be titled and limited to two (2) double-spaced pages.
3. PROFESSIONAL BIOGRAPHY: List the influencing factors in becoming a teacher and include a description of greatest personal contributions and accomplishments in STEM education. Response should be titled and limited to two (2) double-spaced pages.
4. NATIONAL AEROSPACE/STEM TEACHER OF THE YEAR: Describe the message and/or platform the teacher would like to communicate to the teaching profession and public as Teacher of the Year. Response should be titled and limited to one (1) double-spaced page.
5. THREE PAGES OF OTHER DOCUMENTATION: An optional three pages of newspaper articles, other documents, and/or photos that include the teacher doing STEM activities with students (ensure students in photos have media release permission for use).
6. FOUR LETTERS OF SUPPORT: Four recent letters of support from: Chapter President; State President; superintendent or equivalent level administrator; and a colleague, student/former student, parent, or community leader. Effective letters contain evidence of personal knowledge of the teacher and an indication of the qualities necessary for AFA’s National Teacher of the Year. Each letter should be limited to one (1) single-spaced page.
NOTE: Additional documentation and/or letters of support will result in negative scoring points.
